In a slightly strange way, jellyfish embody everything about me. Growing up, I struggled to keep swimming—pushing myself forward all the time, over-thinking, battling drug addictions and a traumatizing childhood. After some significant events and with the support of my family, I came out of my dark time and realized the value in floating. Jellyfish are the only creatures that rely on movement for the sustenance of their lives. They almost have no ability to move on their own so they depend on ocean currents and wind directions to move them on the way they’re supposed to go. When I started floating, I realized everything beautiful that was going on around me. It was already going on but I was never aware. Also similar to me, jellyfish are chill in that way yet they still have a poisonous sting. I have been the sassiest person since I was little. My mom encouraged me to be strong and independent because I grew up in India, where women are supposed to be submissive and obedient. After moving to the US, I realized that women can be powerful. The jellyfish represents me growing into the woman that I’ve always wanted to be; finding acceptance and harmony yet still being strong and deadly :)
The tattoo was done by Jerome Vorndran at Tatu Tattoo in Chicago, IL, and I had a fantastic experience all around.

This is my very first tattoo. It’s a birthday gift to my best friend, we know each other since we were 1 year old. I have lots of pictures with her on my back, in many stages of our lifes. The tattoo is based on a story I wrote to her, if you know portuguese, you can read it right here: http://prosanaparede.blogspot.com.br/2012/01/fernanda.htmlI am the boy, and she is my planet. She is always in my back, she is my safe place, and she’s been all I got in lots of moments. The boy is Stick Boy, from The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy, by Tim Burton, and the planet is an adaptation of one I’ve found on Google. It was made by Jeison, at Design Tattoo, in Joao Pessoa - PB.

Hey my name is Jeni, I’m 19, and this is my third tattoo. I decided to get this mermaid as a half sleeve because I wanted something different. I love this tattoo because it has an elegant look to it like stained glass. The artist that did such an amazing job is Derek Matherne at Southern Sting Tattoo Parlor in Larose, Louisiana. All together the tattoo took up 7 whole hours of work straight, I don’t regret one second of that time. This has to be my favorite piece and I have to thank Derek for making it look exactly how I imagined.
